These first teapots that were introduced to Europeans were made of porcelain. They were highly sought after because it wasn’t until 1756 that porcelain could be made in Europe. Since that time, more and more teapot designs and types have been discovered and created. Many teapots mimicked the Chinese blue and white ones, but most places began to create their own very unique pots during different time periods.

Teapots from the Victorian Era are particularly fancy, and made from many different materials. Porcelain has always been popular, but there were some amazingly elaborate metal teapots made as well.

A teapot has a handle, and it has a spout. Other than that, there are no defining factors that a teapot must have. Some of the pots that are coming out nowadays are very innovative and have strange shapes. It is not unusual to see square teapots, or ones shaped like other things, such as pumpkins.

Many people collect teapots. Usually they have some sort of guidelines, such as a time the pot was made, a theme the pots have, or a certain manufacturer. Some people have a teapot collection that they can use for entertaining, and others only collect antique pots that are strictly for display.

Even if someone does not collect teapots, it is not unusual to see one in a kitchen or dining room because it goes with the décor.
