Chai Tea

Chai tea has become a very popular beverage in the US, and we have many convenient ways of making it and variations on it. But this tea originally came from South Asia and was made by hand in what were sometimes rather complicated recipes. The word “chai” actually just means tea, but in the Western world it has come to mean the strong, spiced tea drink called Masala Chai.

Traditionally, chai tea was made by boiling water, milk, tea leaves, sweeteners, and spices together. The mix would then be strained to remove any solids. Differences in the making of the drink could be found from family to family, or from provinces. Certain areas would have their favorite sweeteners and spices to add in, and there were also differences in the length of time that the brew was allowed to simmer.

If you want to, you can make your own chai tea brew in this traditional manner at home. A lot of people enjoy doing this. If you don’t have time for this process, you can also buy chai spice mixes at many tea stores and grocery stores. If you have never tried any kind of this tea, you can go to many tea houses and cafes to get a cup of this strong, sweet brew.
